Saar Lagerweij
In 2016, during the second year of my Bachelor of Medicine in Groningen, I was introduced to the Expertise Center of Movement Disorders. At the time, I starten supporting research to improve Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for people with movement disorders. I have now started my own MD/PhD project, continuing with this research topic. I want to find out if there are certain characteristics in people with dystonia or Parkinson's disease that can predict that DBS will work well for them (or may not have the desired effect). My interests inlcude clinical neurophysiology, technical treatment methods and the pathophysiology of movement disorders. I also find it fun and important to maintain good contact with patients and colleagues.
In addition to my research, I am complting my Master of Medicine and working through the Student Pool at the UMCG. I live in Groningen with my boyfriend and I love sports, sailing and traveling. In 2019 I traveld for 6 months to Central and South America, where I learned Spanish and sailed from Panama to Colombia.
