Heritability and Genetics in Essential Tremor
Half of the patients who have a diagnosis of essential tremor report trembling as a trait in their family. However, it is unknown what symptoms related to this movement disorder are heritable and what genes are involved.
In this research project we are mapping different characteristics within families, and performing genetic testing. A first publication involved a review of the literature about which disease features run in essential tremor families, and was published in the journal Parkinsonism & Related Disorders.
The main investigator involved is Madelein van der Stouwe and the project is financed by a Mandema Stipend awarded by the Junior Scientific Masterclass. Cheryl Everlo works on this project as an MD/PhD student.
Students can participate in this project, for instance by means of a master thesis: you can find more information here.
